Hormel Foods confirms SPAM products shipped to Hawaii not included in recall

 

Hours after a Hormel Foods SPAM and canned meat recall was announced, the company is reassuring Hawaii residents that the beloved island food is safe to eat. 

Hormel Foods sent out a letter to Hawaii retailers Saturday afternoon saying none of the affected products were shipped to the islands.

The major canned meats producer issued a voluntary recall for more than 228,600 pounds of meat after they were alerted to the presence of metal in products produced made between February 8 and 10.

The problem was discovered after the company received four consumer complaints. The Food Safety and Inspection Service was notified of the contaminants on Thursday and issued the recall Saturday.

The recall includes several thousand 12-ounce cans of SPAM Classic and Luncheon Loaf.

Hormel Foods says the affected products were mainly shipped to mid-western states, and have the establishment number “EST. 199N” on the bottom of the can. In addition affected cans will have a Best By date of Feb 2021.

Some Hawaii News Now viewers asked about cans with "EST. 199" (without the N), and rest assured, the product is safe, a company official said.
