Asbestos Shingles

It is possible to gently brush off the old paint while keeping the siding damp to prevent dust. You’ll need to where an HEPA respirator, disposable overalls and gloves, then work over tarps placed on the ground to catch the flakes of paint since they’re guaranteed to contain lead. Lead paint wasn’t outlawed until 1978, so it’s sure to be present on siding going back to the 1950s. Let the siding dry, then prime and paint with the best exterior latex you can find.

I'm a contractor & Asbestos siding is Not dangerous unless pulverized to allow dust being enhauled. Asbestos siding is very hard, stays in solid form, and not in powder form, which makes it pretty much harmless. Now, industrial use of asbestos, such as the type used to insulate pipes, for example, is dangerous because it turns into a cloud of dust like talcom powder. This form of powdered asbestos is the main cause of mesothelioma and dangerous as hell. Asbestos siding has an extremely long life; therefore, it's worth more to have a house with siding that lasts 100 years, don't you think?

Question: I have an old 1930s home in western Connecticut. It has two layers of siding on it. The first layer is wood shakes, some of which I know are rotten and termite damaged. Over that wood layer is asbestos siding. The pieces are about 20" x 10". Latex paint is peeling off and the whole thing looks like crap. I would like to have both layers removed, down to the sheathing, make the necessary repairs, wrap and side the house with cedar clapboard.

Zinc, Copper & Aluminium While lead roofing might be the most popular option for homeowners, there are a variety of alternatives such as zinc, copper and aluminium. JJ Roofing offers all of these options below all of which come with their own benefits. Zinc is a very good metal for roofing because of its excellent corrosion resistance. It is also self-healing which means that it can successfully recover if it gets scratched or scraped. Another great property of zinc is its low maintenance requirements. Even if it’s constantly being exposed to wind and rain, it can easily withstand the adverse weather which is why it has been referred to as a “fit and forget” material. Zinc is also completely recyclable once it has reached the end of its service life. Copper roofing is increasingly popular for a number of reasons. Its hue can greatly complement a home and give it a classic aesthetic because the sheen of new copper settles into a blue and green patina over time. This means that a copper roof may increase your property’s value due to its traditional look. Copper roofs are also strong lasting up to 50 years with proper care and maintenance. Additionally, it’s a lightweight material that will not put as much stress on your home’s structures as some heavier metals might. Aluminium roofs are strong, attractive as well as affordable. Aluminium roofing hasn’t been a popular choice in the past due to its high cost but recent innovations have made it a much more cost effective option for homeowners. On top of aluminium’s visual appeal, it is also a highly malleable material making it appropriate for a wide variety of roofing styles.Browse Category

Asbestos tiles did not comprise solely of asbestos. Asbestos roofing tiles are actually largely made from cement, with the now banned product added into the cement mixture. Depending on the manufacturer, the cement tiles comprised typically of between 10-15% asbestos.
